Stencil Score!

I was recently contacted by a long lost customer of Royal Design Studio stencils who is now in the real estate biz. Seems that one of HER customers had a stack of stencils in their home and were looking to find them a new home. Would I like to make an offer. Ummmmm, YEAH!

Stencil-Score

I have no idea what they are “worth”, but they were worth something to me, so I am now the proud owner of a series of vintage brass stencils (apparently found in an old lighting factory in Michigan). The patterns are really unique, and some will work their way in to new stencil designs from Royal Design Studio. My main thought, though, is to transform them into some special wall art. I am open to suggestions…..

I am loving that brass Morrocan border in the upper left. Lucky you! I think some installation art piece could be very dramatic.

    Hi Melanie -
What an wonderful find! Any idea how old they are?
Do you remember Peggy Decker’s Master Stenciler submission which was an installation of a large stencil of a quotation? (Wish I could remember the quotation) She placed a light in front of it in such a way as to create a “print” on the wall behind it. I thought it was brilliant and would be a terific way to display a treasured stencil. The stencil would be sandwiched between 2 pieces of glass. A deep memory box style frame would give you the distance that you need between the wall and the stencil or you could hang the frames from the ceiling to get the necesary distance. You could create one large piece that would be a collage of designs or frame each stencil individually and hang it as a group. Hmmm, that gets me thinking about some cool early stencils that I cut out of ledger paper for bronze powder stneciling….maybe I should get those out!
    As always, thanks for sharing!
    Nancy

Hi Nancy! So nice to hear from you!! I hope you are doing well! You might remember the woman who contacted me about the stencils to buy-Carolyn Steiger. That display that Peggy did sounds very clever and I’m sure you have quite a stencil collection yourself. Are you still doing the Rufus Porter style murals?

Not doing alot of painting these days – grandchildren and life just got in the way! The economy here in RI is not the best and the wonderful custom finishes that sell in other parts of the country just don’t work here.
I would love to see what you finally decide to do with the stencils….

Sorry to hear that, Nancy, but I’m sure you are enjoying your grandchildren!
